Lincoln ? The Nebraska rifle team held off pressure from the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday to secure a 4,661-4,653 win at the Nebraska Rifle Range in Lincoln. The victory over the now 3-5 Wildcats improves NU’s record to 5-0 on the season.
Although the Huskers came out on top, Kentucky kept the match close, holding the Huskers to their smallest margin of victory this season.
“Our goal is to score around 4,680-plus every meet,” Head Coach Launi Meili said. “We didn’t reach that today and we didn’t win by very much. We knew that Kentucky was going to be our toughest competition, but we weren’t entirely prepared for the more challenging match.”
The Huskers were led in smallbore by sophomore Kirsten Weiss who shot a 584 in regulation and a 95 in the finals for a total of 679. Following close behind was senior Misty Chanek with a total score of 678.
In air rifle, junior Kristina Fehlings marked a season-high score of 591 and finished fourth overall after shooting a 97 the in finals for a total of 688. Leading the discipline once again was Nebraska sophomore Andrea Franz?n whose score of 592 in regulation and 99 in the finals gave her the top match score of 691. It is the third time in the 2005-06 season that Franz?n, a 2005 NCAA All-American, has owned the top match spot in air rifle.
Nebraska returns to action following the Thanksgiving break with its last home match of the season on Dec. 3 against Missouri-KansasCity. The competition will begin at 8 a.m. at the Nebraska Rifle Range and will be the last contest for the Huskers until the collegiate season resumes on Jan. 14, 2006.
