Lincoln ? A pair of Nebraska volleyball stalwarts were honored Thursday, as they were chosen for the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII Volleyball Team - University Division as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Junior outside hitter Christina Houghtelling (Cambridge, Neb.) and sophomore right-side hitter Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, Ontario) both garnered first-team honors, as No. 1 Nebraska was the only squad with two first-team selections in District VII.
Houghtelling, who carries a 3.903 GPA in elementary education with coaching endorsement, has been one of the best outside hitters in the country, averaging 3.59 kills, 2.37 digs and 1.04 blocks per game in 24 matches. She was named the MVP of the AVCA/NACWAA College Volleyball Showcase earlier this season and ranks among the league leaders in both kills and hitting percentage. A member of NU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she is involved in numerous community activities, including the Fall Tour of Excellence and the Juvenile Diabetes Walk.
Pavan, who owns a perfect 4.00 GPA in biochemistry, has proven herself as one of the country’s elite volleyball players. A first-team AVCA All-American and National Freshman of the Year in 2004, Pavan averages a team-high 3.76 kills, 1.29 blocks and 1.71 digs, as she ranks among Big 12 leaders in kills, blocks, digs and service aces. Outside of volleyball, Pavan is also heavily active in community outreach, including the Friendship Home Safequarters program and the Fall Tour of Excellence in Blair last month.
In all, four of the seven selections in District VII were from Big 12 programs, as Kansas’ Paula Caten and Missouri’s Jessica Vander Kooi were also honored.
Voting for ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America awards will occur later this month, with the Academic All-America teams announced in early December. The Huskers have produced a nation-leading 222 Academic All-Americans across all teams and all sports, 60 more than second-place Notre Dame.
