Huskers Put Down Rebels on the Road

Oxford, Miss. ? In its first road match of the 2005-06 season, the Nebraska rifle team topped conference foes Ole Miss, 4,667-4,600.  Although the final score was some 20 points below the mark the Huskers set in their opener against Air Force two weeks back, the result was much the same.

“It just shows us that when we get on the road we’ll have to rise to the occasion and fight harder for those higher scores,” Head Coach Launi Meili said.  “We’ll take the win, but ultimately our focus needs to be on achieving the kinds of scores that will make us competitive with the rest of the nation.”

Individually, several Huskers did indeed rise to the challenge beginning with a solid performance by junior Kristina Fehlings with scores of 586 in both smallbore and air rifle.  However, it was Fehlings’ teammate, sophomore Kirsten Weiss, who earned top honors in the smallbore.  Weiss shot a 583, three points lower than Fehlings, to begin the discipline but finished strong with an outstanding finals score of 97 for a total 680 and the highest smallbore score of the competition.

The air rifle also belonged to the Huskers thanks to a stellar performance from sophomore Andrea Franz?n who shot a score of 592 to win the event.  Franz?n has finished in either the No. 1 or No. 2 spot in all three of Nebraska’s matches this season, taking first in the last two.

“Andrea (Franz?n) knows that she can shoot at about that 593 range,” Meili said.  “She proved that last year.  Now her goal has got to be to push on to that next level and I know she’s entirely capable of it.”

This is the third consecutive for Nebraska over the Rebels and the fifth in NU program history since the two teams began competing in 2001.  The win also improved Nebraska’s record to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Great America Rifle Conference.

The Huskers continue their road trip tomorrow with a match against the Memphis Tigers in Memphis, Tenn.  Nebraska then returns home for a series of matches beginning with Kentucky on Nov. 19 and the University of Missouri at Kansas City on Dec. 3.
