Lincoln - Behind two goals from freshman Aysha Jamani and a superb effort from the entire squad, the Nebraska soccer team earned a dominating 3-0 shutout over Missouri on Sunday in front of 512 fans at the Nebraska Soccer Field and a national television audience on CSTV.
Both of Jamani's goals came in the first half as she recorded the second multi-goal game of her career and increased her team-best goal total to six. In net, fellow freshman Jamie Klages posted her second consecutive shutout. Klages, making her fourth consecutive start, has now allowed only one goal in three Big 12 Conference games and her scoreless minutes streak now stands at 253:36.
With the win, Nebraska (7-3-1, 2-0-1 Big 12) picked up three points in the conference standings and improved to 3-0-1 in their last four games. The victory also improved the Huskers' record to a perfect 6-0 this season when leading at the half. Missouri fell to 6-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Big 12.
NU controlled play the entire game and got on the scoreboard just 3:40 into the match. Freshman Selenia Iacchelli sent a ball to Jamani, who beat a pair of Tiger defenders and launched a perfectly-placed shot into the top of the net from 25 yards out to beat MU goalkeeper Laura Buehrig.
Jamani added her second goal of the game at 32:02 to put the Huskers in command. With the ball deep in the box near the endline, senior Vern Fitzgerald played a ball to Jamani who sent a shot on goal. With Buehrig out of the net, Missouri's defense tried to clear the ball, but Jamani's shot crossed the line before it could recover.
After outshooting the Tigers 11-3 in the first half, Nebraska continued to control the game in the second period. Although outshot 8-7 in the final 45 minutes, the Huskers added another goal and had several good scoring opportunities.
In the 59th minute, great work from Jamani earned the Huskers a corner kick. On the ensuing kick, junior Brittany Timko played a beautiful ball to the far post, where Iacchelli knocked it in to give NU a 3-0 lead.
In the 62nd minute, freshman Danielle Schoen nearly made it a four-goal cushion. Schoen beat the Missouri defense and sent a shot on goal from 10 yards out that Buehrig was able to deflect. Fellow freshman Lauren Isenhower found the rebound, but her shot sailed high.
Twenty minutes later, Schoen drew a foul just outside the Tigers' box to set up a dangerous free kick for the Huskers. Senior Nikki Baker took a shot off the free kick, but her boot sailed high.
Missouri's best chance to score came with 6:54 remaining when Elyse Nikonchuk ripped a shot from 25 yards out that bounded off the crossbar.
For the game, NU placed eight shots on goal to MU's six and the Huskers earned 10 corner kicks, while limiting the Tigers to just one. Klages finished with six saves and lowered her season goals-against average to 0.55. Buehrig recorded five saves for MU, while tying her season-high of three goals allowed.
Nebraska returns to action next weekend as it opens a four-game road trip. The Huskers travel to Baylor for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, before a showdown at 14th-ranked Texas A&M at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
