Fayetteville, Ark.? The Nebraska swimming and diving team used strong efforts from its distance squad and two wins on the diving boards to tally nine victories as a team and start the season 1-0 with a 184-115 win at Arkansas.
The Huskers won seven races in the pool, including three by junior Lauren Bailey and a pair by junior co-captain Kate Wheeler. The victories helped Nebraska earn its 11th dual win in the last 12 meets dating back to the 2003-04 season.
Bailey took victories in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:13.19), 200-yard backstroke (2:05.72) and 200-yard IM (2:09.25) with an average margin of victory of nearly five seconds per race, while Wheeler won the 200- (1:52.16) and 500-yard freestyle (5:05.67) and was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle (52.31).
Amy Buoy, a returning NCAA-qualifier, swept the one- and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 261.52 and 290.91. Redshirt freshman Courtney Jolly was runner-up on the three meter (254.47) and third on the one meter (232.42).
Junior Bailey Ingles added a win in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:07.43 to help Nebraska extend its lead midway through the meet. The Huskers shut the door on the Lady 'Backs with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle (Wheeler, junior Michelle Criss, sophomore Lynn Siemert and freshman Jenny Toler) in a time of 3:32.79 to end the meet.
Nebraska hosts a pair of home dual meets next weekend by welcoming Nebraska-Omaha to the Devaney Center Pool on Friday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m., and Northern Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m.
