Coming off one of the most successful regular seasons in school history, the Nebraska swimming and diving team will hit the road to kick off the 2005-06 regular season on Friday, Oct. 14 at the Big 12 Relays in Columbia, Mo., before facing the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, Oct. 15.
The annual Big 12 Relays will start at 9 a.m. and run throughout most the day, while the dual matchup with Arkansas will begin at Noon.
The experienced Huskers return 20 letterwinners to this season’s team that finished 8-1 in the regular season last year and placed third at the Big 12 Championships, Nebraska’s highest finish since 2001.
Returning NCAA qualifiers Lauren Bailey and Amie Buoy will lead the Huskers in front of a strong supporting corps of a combined 17 juniors and seniors.
Although the competitions are the Huskers’ first regular season meets of the year, the competitive atmosphere will not be unfamiliar to this squad.
On Sept. 30, the Huskers hosted the annual Red/White Intrasquad meet when Bailey led the White to a 64-50 victory. Last weekend, 15 former Huskers returned to the Devaney Center Pool, including nine All-Americans, for the fourth annual Alumni Meet, helping to prepare the Huskers for the regular season.
Nebraska will open the home portion of its schedule with two meets at the Devaney Center Pool next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 8, the Huskers will host Nebraska-Omaha at 5 p.m., before taking on Northern Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m.
Scouting the Opponents
The Huskers were fourth at last year’s Big 12 Relays, which were won by the University of Texas, who enters the field as the favorite after capturing the 2005 Big 12 Championship and a sixth-place NCAA finish.
Nebraska gained a spot on the conference field with its third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships, finishing ahead of Kansas, Missouri and Iowa State, and behind Texas and Texas A&M, which went on to a 14th-place team finish at the NCAA Championships.
In dual action, the Huskers defeated Kansas and Iowa State, but was defeated by Missouri in the last dual meet of the season.
This will be Nebraska’s 10th all-time meeting with Arkansas. The Huskers hold a 5-4 edge with the last meeting a 150-90 Razorback victory in Lincoln in 1992.
The Razorbacks were 3-9 in dual action last season, and finished ninth in the Southeastern Conference. Angela Kora is the lone senior on the squad as the Lady Backs lost five due to graduation last year.
