Hartmann Continues to Roll at Riviera/ITA Championships

Los Angeles, Calif.?Kim Hartmann, a freshman, on the Nebraska women’s tennis team, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Riviera/ITA Championships Qualifying Tournament Tuesday by defeating two nationally ranked opponents.

In her first match, the native of Germany faced the No. 28 player in the nation, Anca Anastasiu of USC.  Hartmann took the first set, 6-1, and never looked back, taking the match in straight sets.  Anastasiu is the highest ranked player a Husker has beaten since Gitte Ostermann defeated then-No. 22 Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion in 2003.

In the second round, Hartmann faced Harvard’s Melissa Anderson, who is ranked No. 78 nationally.  Hartmann carried the momentum over from her first match and dominated Anderson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Hartmann has now defeated the Nos. 100, 78 and 22  nationally ranked players in her first five matches as a Husker.

Assistant coach Hayden Perez spoke highly of Hartmann’s mental toughness that she showed throughout the day.

“She is really playing well right now,” Perez said.  “She is a very mentally strong player.  When the game gets tough, she stays strong and makes good judgments and good shots.”

Hartmann hits the court again Wednesday, Oct. 5 when she faces Laruen Jones of BYU in the quarterfinals of the Qualifying Tournament of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
