Lincoln - The Nebraska soccer team doubled Colorado College's shot total, but the visiting Tigers got the win as Lisa Balsama scored the game's only goal on a counter-attack for a 1-0 win over the Huskers at the Nebraska Soccer Field Friday evening.
With the victory, Colorado College improved to 5-0 on the year, while the Huskers slipped to 3-2 on the year, suffering their first-ever defeat at the new Nebraska Soccer Field.
Nebraska controlled the pace early, but a long run that started around the midfield stripe by Balsama put her one-on-one with NU freshman goalkeeper Jamie Klages. Balsama's kick was targeted perfectly to the top corner of the goal and found the back of the net at 11:04 for the only goal of the game.
For the game, Balsama took four of Colorado College's six shots and had another excellent scoring attempt off a counter-attack that was tipped high by Klages.
Trailing at the half for only the second time this season, the Huskers opened the second period with a flurry. Colorado College goalkeeper Geneva Sills made three saves in the first 5:49 of the period. Nebraska had an excellent chance to score when senior Nikki Baker fired a shot on goal that was saved by Sills and freshman Aysha Jamani attempted to follow the shot, but was tripped up on the play and couldn't generate enough power on the shot to beat Sills.
Freshman Selenia Iacchelli nearly tied the game in the 61st minute when she sent an excellent shot that had Sills beat, but bounced off the post. The Huskers kept up the pressure and won four corner kicks in the final 4:39, but were unable to take advantage.
Perhaps NU's final scoring chance came with 4:50 left, when Jamani played an excellent ball to freshman Lauren Isenhower, who hit a great one-time shot that Sills was able to dive and deflect wide of the goal.
In the second half, the Huskers outshot the Tigers, 9-2, and owned a 12-6 advantage in the game. NU also doubled Colorado College in corner kicks, 8-4.
In net, Klages posted two saves for the Huskers, while Sills made five stops for the Tigers. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Colorado College.
