Huskers Conclude Play at Denver Fall Invitational

Denver-The Nebraska men’s tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall Sunday as play concluded at the Denver Fall Invitational in Denver, Colo.

 

In Singles Flight A, Minnesota’s DJ Gaetz barely squeezed by junior James Clow in the consolation finals, defeating him 7-6 (8), 7-5.

 

The tournament champion for Singles Flight A was Adam Holmstrom of Denver, the No. 2 seed of the tournament, who defeated No. 1 seed Shannon Buck of Air Force 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

 

In Singles Flight B, sophomore Karl Jones battled through three sets in the consolation semi-finals to beat Utah’s Dan Mascall 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Jones advanced to the consolation finals, where he was defeated by Utah’s Ryan Scott in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

 

Arizona’s Jason Labrosse defeated teammate Francois VanderMerwe 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (10-7) to win the Singles Flight B tournament final.

 

Nebraska was not represented in the Men’s Open Doubles. The tournament champion was Niklas Persson and Holmstrom, the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Denver duo defeated Arizona’s Daniel Andrus and Francois VanderMerwe, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, 8-6.

 

The Huskers will see their next tournament action in less than a week, as they face off in the ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 30 ? Oct. 6, beginning at 9 a.m.
