Huskers Open Fall Season at Denver Fall Invitational

Denver-The Nebraska men’s tennis team opened its season Friday at the Denver Fall Invitational in Denver, Colo. Friday was the first day of a three-day tournament held at the Benjamin F. Stapleton Jr. Tennis Pavillion and Cherry Hills Country Club.

 

In Singles Flight A, senior Jerry Posch was defeated by Colorado’s Peter Bjork in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Utah’s Tomasz Grzyb squeezed by junior Adrian Szatmary in a hard-fought match with a final of 7-6 (2), 6-2.

 

Junior Sean Coetzee fell to Denver’s Viktor Zetterholm in Nebraska’s closest Singles Flight A with a final of 7-6 (2), 6-3.

 

In the consolation round, Szatmary defeated junior James Clow with a final score of 7-6, 3-0. Clow did not complete the second match.

 

Junior Sean Coetzee fell to Colorado’s Chad Tsuda in the consolation round 6-2, 6-2.

 

In the Singles Flight B, New Mexico’s Chandler Brass defeated sophomore Karl Jones 6-1, 6-3.

 

Nebraska freshman Ayhan Oray snagged the two final Husker victories for the day. Oray defeated Air Force’s Greg Ferry in the first round 6-1, 6-3 and rolled over New Mexico’s Derek Lynch in the second round 6-2, 6-2.

 

In doubles action, Clow and sophomore Karl Jones advanced to the Round of 16 with an 8-6 victory over Keith Cronican and Ryan White of Air Force. Coetzee and Oray posted an opening round victory before falling in the Round of 32 to Denver's Nejc Smole and Viktor Zetterholm, 8-1.

 

On Saturday Clow and Jones will face the top-seeded Utah duo of Zach Granger and Miron Mann at 4 p.m. (CST). The Huskers' top doubles team featuring Posch and Szatmary, the No. 7 seed, received a bye in the Round of 32 and open play tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Utah's Nick Coutts and Jason Yap.

 

The tournament continues on Saturday, with singles play beginning at 9 a.m.
