Huskers Fare Well at Drake

Des Moines, Iowa?Three Members of the Nebraska women’s tennis team played well and advanced in the Lloyd Stokstad Tennis Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday.

 

In the semifinals of the singles Dog Flight bracket, freshman Ellinor Zugner defeated Iowa State’s Kara Hickey in a tight three-set thriller, 6-2, 6-7 (11-9), 13-11, while senior Jennifer Cremieux defeated Drake’s Veronika Lesyova in straight sets, 7-6 (0), 6-1.  Zugner and Cremieux will face each other in the finals of the Dog Flight bracket Sunday, September, 17.

 

Assistant coach Hayden Perez was pleased with the mental toughness they showed.

 

“It was awesome tennis,“ Perez said.  “Ellinor Zugner was very cool under pressure and came through on two close tiebreakers.  To come back in the third tiebreaker like she did was awesome to watch.  Jennifer Cremieux played very intelligently, as well.”

 

In the consolation bracket of the singles Bull Flight, senior Ewelina Skaza defeated Northern Colorado’s Renee Nuccio in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

 

In the doubles Blue Flight bracket, Cremieux and Zugner dominated Kari Sloboth and Daria Zawislak of Drake, 8-0, but fell in the semifinals to IowaState’s Elizabeth Cherel and Hickey, 8-5.

 

The tournament will conclude on Sunday and will include the finals of the singles Dog Flight bracket between Cremieux and Zugner.
