Bill Callahan Quotes

Opening Statement:
“First off I want to congratulate our team on a fine victory, coming out in the second half the way that they did was outstanding. We've been working to that end, coming out and being a better ball club in the second half and I think we did that tonight."

"I think people realized tonight that Wake Forest is a good football team. We achieved a goal that not many people achieve by holding them to three points, which many people haven't done in the last few years. We were really pleased with the fact that we had the opportunity to take them out of the game early on in the contest, and then obviously in the second half. It forced them into more of a one-dimensional attack, which allowed our defense to excel even further. Overall it was a tremendous effort by our team. Our coaches did  an excellent job and I'm proud of the way that we responded tonight."

On the three defensive touchdowns:
"Any time that you can creat a turnover on defense, and then capitalize with a score, it just adds to the dimension of momentum. I thought our team did that quite well. I mean, you look at (senior safety) Daniel Bullocks, the ability to strip the ball and then run it in for a touchdown, that's impressive."

"What we're seeing now is players making plays that we work on in practice. Stripping the ball, clubbing, trying to pull it out, and then scoring. I thought it was exceptional. I look at the pressure we put on the quarterback, (sophomore linebacker) Corey McKeon is just playing so well right now. I can't say enough about the way he's playing, (junior linebacker) Stewart Bradley's playing. We've got a very good linebacking corp, (sophomore linebacker) Bo Ruud, they're all playing hard, making plays. It's very instinctive and reactive football at this point in the season."

On the offense tonight compared to last week:
"I thought the second half we answered the bell. I thought we came out in the second half and put together a drive and got on the board, and that's the confidence we need. We weren't pleased at all, but we kept banging on the door. We were persistent in what we were trying to get accomplished on offense. I think you see abilities by (junior quarterback) Zac Taylor, his ability to throw the football, his ability to throw accurately, and obviously we've got a couple of things to work on."

"We just had a very aggressive approach tonight, and I think you can see by all the movement we're trying to create, and generate on the program, I thought we were successful in some spots and shoddy in others. But this offense is going to take a little time. We've got a  lot of young players, a lot of new players especially at quarterback, left tackle, wide receiver. We're trying to gain that consistency we haven't had. We're pulling through, we got better in the second half. We're still not where we need to be. We've got a long ways to go."

On the running game's progress:
"If you watch Wake Forest, their offense created some problems for our defense. I thought there were some times when we showed consistency, Cory's (senior I-back Cory Ross) long run. We put some dents in their defense. But I think overall we need to commit to it and try to keep it wide open and create a balanced attack. We were really trying to keep a balanced attack."

On the defensive touchdowns taking the pressure off the offense:
"Well it makes the play calling a lot easier. It allows you to free wheel a little bit in terms of play selection so you don't have to feel pressure in making calls. It allows you a little more flexibility."

On the receivers dropping balls:
"I think anytime you have a drop, especially on a third-down play, it's frustrating for everybody. We've just got to be more consistent, and move the ball better than we did tonight."

On going for it on fourth down:
"We went for it on the first series and made it. Then the second fourth-down that came up with a fourth and short situation, we went for it and got stuffed pretty good. I'm just trying to illustrate to our team that I beleive in them and I have confidence that we're going to make it. I haven't lost any confidence that we couldn't make it, and I'd do it again."
