Lincoln - The Nebraska football team worked out for 2 1/2 hours Friday morning in Cook Pavilion to start the last two-a-day session during fall camp. Afternoon showers forced the Huskers back inside for the two-hour afternoon workout. Coach Bill Callahan said he liked the way the team has continued to prepare for the campaign throughout fall camp and the fact that the Huskers have worked to be ready for all phases of the game when the season starts.
"Mentally, we are fresh and I think that is a key aspect that you come out of two-a-days in good shape mentally," Callahan said. "We are getting better every practice with the amount of reps that we are getting. I like the attitude, camaraderie and chemistry."
Callahan also noted the team's improved training ability after an offseason of workouts with Head Strength Coach Dave Kennedy.
"Dave has done a great job of getting the guys prepared and the team has more stamina and more speed," Callahan said. "In a two and one-half hour practice, you can see their speed and stamina are not going down."
Callahan said the team has reached many of its objectives during fall camp and will get set to move into preparations for the season opener against Maine next week. The Huskers and Black Bears will kick off at 6 p.m. on Sept. 3 to start the 116th season in Nebraska history.
"We accomplished many things in training camp; we had set objectives to accomplish and worked to that end," Callahan said. "There is an energy, and the focus and concentration is better than last year. We are being smart about how we scrimmage and now we're at the point where we will start to look at backing down how we are doing things (to prepare for the Maine game)."
Nebraska continues with a second workout session Friday afternoon. The Huskers will not practice on Saturday during Fan Day, which begins at 10 a.m. in Memorial Stadium. For more information on Fan Day, including a team seating chart, visit Huskers.com.
