LINCOLN ? The Nebraska football team continued training camp Tuesday afternoon outside on the grass practice fields before moving inside Cook Pavilion during its 13th practice. NU scrimmaged once again, focusing primarily on short yardage and goal line situations for the second time this fall.
Offensive Coordinator Jay Norvell conveyed that the Huskers are in the midst of their most physical week of fall camp, a period which will tell the coaches a lot about their team.
"We banged pretty good the last two days," Norvell said. "We hit much more than we did last year in camp. We are going to continue to hit. This is our two-a-day week, and we only have one week of two-a-days, so we are going to (practice) them pretty good and see what we have. We’ll find out a lot about our young players and really get our continuity going with our first unit. That’s really important that we get that continuity going with our first offense and first defense."
Quarterback Zac Taylor (offense) was one of three Huskers sporting yellow jerseys during Tuesday’s workout, along with Dane Todd (special teams) and Jay Moore (defense), who was celebrating his 22nd birthday. Norvell said that Taylor’s continued progress warranted the offensive award.
"He has stepped up his game," Norvell said. "We challenged everybody now after being in camp for a couple of weeks, and he started really zeroing in on his reads and accuracy and started to lead our offense. It is good to see, and he needs to continue that progress.
"We are making strides every day in our understanding of different concepts. The more that we rep it as an offense with the receivers, our running backs and tight ends, the more we get it. His understanding has increased, and his comfort level has increased, so we just have to continue that. It’s all about refining mechanics and everyday he really works hard and focuses on refining his mechanics."
NU will continue its two-a-day workouts Wednesday with pre-season practices 14 and 15 of 29, beginning at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. Head Coach Bill Callahan and requested players will be available to speak with the media following exercises.
