Huskers Run Past Cardinals in Exhibition

Louisville, Ky. - The Nebraska soccer team got the 2005 season off to a fast start by scoring two goals in the opening five minutes on its way to a 3-0 exhibition victory over Louisville on Sunday afternoon. The Huskers added a third goal late in the first half and the two teams played through a scoreless second half.

Senior Nikki Baker scored the first two goals in lightning-quick fashion. Her first goal came just 3:54 into the game, scoring off assists from sophomore Jessie Bruch and junior Brittany Timko. Baker struck again only 15 seconds later, finding the back of the net off another assist from Timko, the 2004 Big 12 Player of the Year and a third-team NSCAA All-American.

The 15-second span between goals is one second faster than the school record for shortest span between goals, set by Timko last season. However, because it was an exhibition match, Timko's record will stand.

Bunkers then added a goal off a corner kick in the 43rd minute to provide the final 3-0 margin. Baker and Bunkers each finished with a perfect shooting percentage, Baker scoring on both of her shots and Bunkers scoring on her lone attempt. For the game, NU outshot Louisville 20-5, including placing 12 shots on goal to just two for the Cardinals.

In a dominant first half, NU outshot Louisville, 11-1, and recorded five corner kicks while shutting the Cardinal out in that category. For the game, the Huskers out-cornered Louisville, 8-2.

In net, junior Katie Wright playing the first half, before freshman Jamie Klages preserved the shutout in the second half. In all, 20 players saw action for the Huskers, including freshmen Selenia Iacchelli, Jessie Goodell, Ali Lokanc, Lauren Isenhower, Aysha Jamani and Kellie Jensen. Iacchelli, who joined the team for the spring season, earned a start in the midfield.

Nebraska returns home for a busy stretch this week. The annual Meet-N-Beat the Huskers night will be held on Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Nebraska Soccer Field, located immediately northeast of Memorial Stadium in the middle of the Ed Weir Track. NU will then hold its RedWhite Scrimmage on Saturday at Noon. Admission to both events is free.
