LINCOLN ? The Nebraska football team continued fall camp Friday with a two-and-one-half hour practice in half pads on the grass practice fields north of Memorial Stadium. The Huskers continued to install offensive and defensive sets for the second consecutive practice in temperatures that were much warmer than Thursday’s opening session.
"We put a lot more (offense) in today," Offensive Coordinator Jay Norvell said. "It’s a cumulative effect. Every day we put more offense in and things slow down more for these guys. We are getting more accomplished, teaching more technique and getting a lot of plays in."
NU’s 2005 preseason practice schedule is more spread out than it was during Head Coach Bill Callahan’s first training camp last season, which began on Aug. 9. The squad has three off days scheduled among its first 17 days of camp, including only four two-a-day workouts during that period. In comparison, the Huskers practiced the first 14 days of the 2004 preseason without a break.
"When the NCAA gave us the opportunity to start on (Aug. 3rd) this year, we started earlier to give the guys more of a break during camp," Norvell said. "Practices are more spread out, we are less rushed and that helps us in our teaching, too. We are getting more meeting time, so we are getting more time to talk about the techniques and show the films. It really slows the teaching process down. With all of the new guys we have, that’s really important."
Nebraska continues fall camp Saturday with a 2:15 p.m. practice. Coach Callahan and players will address the media following the workout.
