Lincoln ? University of Nebraska pitcher Johnny Dorn (Grand Island, Neb.) capped his freshman campaign with another honor Wednesday, as he was named a first-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander played a major role in Nebraska’s run to the College World Series, compiling a 12-2 record with a 2.16 ERA in 104 innings of work. Dorn tied for the Big 12 lead with 12 wins and ranked fifth in ERA and opponent batting average (.199). A third-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America, Dorn was a first-team All-Big 12 pick and was the league’s Freshman Pitcher of the Year.
Dorn, who earned Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America honors earlier in June, becomes only the second Husker baseball player to be a first-team Freshman All-American by Baseball America, joining Matt Hopper in 2000. Dorn was one of four Big 12 players selected for the first team.
Nebraska finished the 2005 season with a school-record 57 wins and was ranked as high as fifth in the national polls. The Huskers, who are one of only six programs nationally to earn three CWS appearances in the past five years, won both the Big 12 regular-season and tournament crowns in 2005.
