Timmons Takes on Operations Role

Lincoln ? Nebraska women’s basketball coach Connie Yori announced Tuesday that Assistant Coach Angela Timmons will move into the role of Director of Operations for the Huskers during the 2005-06 season. Timmons’ shift from the coaching to administrative role will complete the NU staff for the upcoming season.

Timmons, who has served as an assistant coach at Nebraska for three seasons since joining Yori’s original Husker staff for the 2002-03 season, said she wanted to take on the new role for the opportunities it provided.

"I am excited about the chance to learn more about all aspects of the program, especially expanding my knowledge of the Nebraska Athletic Department as a whole," Timmons said. "I love Lincoln, the state of Nebraska and the University, so I wanted to stay here, but change my role in the program."

Timmons, who was recruited by Yori to Creighton and served as an assistant coach under Yori for the Bluejays before coming to Nebraska, has played an integral role in getting the Husker program moving forward over the past three years. In Timmons’ first season, the Huskers had just six available scholarship players.

The past three years, Timmons has helped Nebraska land excellent recruiting classes that included 2005 first-team All-Big 12 sophomore guard Kiera Hardy and 2005 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Jelena Spiric.

"Angela has done an outstanding job at helping us correct the lack of numbers we had when we arrived at Nebraska, while adding some really talented young players to our roster," Yori said. "She has proven herself as a talented recruiter and assistant coach at this level, but she wanted a chance to take a step back from coaching a little bit to concentrate on the administrative side of things. She has shown extreme loyalty to this program and has helped immensely in building our program, so I think she deserved a chance to make a change she wanted to make."

Timmons has coordinated Nebraska’s recruiting efforts in each of the past two seasons, and helped the Huskers land a six-player class for the 2004-05 season and three more players in 2005-06.

Timmons fills the director of operations position vacated by Aubrey Eblin, who joined former Husker assistant coach Cindy Fisher on the University of San Diego coaching staff. Fisher was hired as San Diego’s head coach earlier this spring, and hired Eblin as an assistant coach on the Torero staff.

Former California and Washington assistant coach Sunny Smallwood joined the Nebraska staff on May 17, while Tory Verdi completed NU’s 2005-06 staff on May 31. Smallwood and Verdi join LaKale Malone, who is entering her third season as an assistant with the Huskers, on Nebraska’s coaching staff.

Timmons will enter her fourth season on Nebraska’s staff, after coaching the 2001-02 season with Yori at Creighton. She was a two-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference guard at Creighton from 1997 to 2001. She played in 113 career games for CU and closed her career in Creighton’s top 10 in scoring, assists and steals.
