Gordon Named First-Team All-American

Oklahoma City, Okla. ? University of Nebraska third baseman Alex Gordon was honored Thursday, as he was chosen for Sport Weekly’s All-America team.

With the selection by the publication, Gordon becomes only the second two-time first-team All-American in school history, joining Shane Komine, who garnered first-team accolades in 2000 and 2001.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder enters Thursday’s game against Oklahoma hitting .391 with 16 homers and 53 RBIs, as he ranks in the top-10 of the Big 12 in 11 of 12 offensive categories. He was chosen as the Big 12’s Player of the Year on Wednesday and is one of five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award.

Gordon was one of three players selected to the first team, joining Texas Tech shortstop Cameron Blair and Texas reliever J. Brent Cox, but the only player chosen to the first team.

A complete listing of the 2005 Sports Weekly All-America team is available in this week’s edition of Sports Weekly, on sale through next Tuesday.

The Huskers are scheduled to take on Oklahoma at 1p.m. at the SBC Bricktown Ballpark at 1p.m., but the opening game between Texas and Kansas, which was scheduled for 10 a.m., has been delayed by rain and will not begin until 11:05 a.m.
