Nebraska Falls in Quarterfinals of Conference Tournament to Colorado

Austin, Texas?The third-seeded Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to the No. 6 seed Colorado Buffaloes, 4-2, Friday, April 29, in Austin, Texas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championships. With the loss, NU was eliminated from the tournament and fell to 18-3 on the year. Nebraska will now await word on whether it will earn its first-ever at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament when the pairings are announced on Tuesday, May 3.

Head Coach Scott Jacobson was pleased with the effort his team played with.

"I was proud of our kids, " Jacobson said. "I thought we hung in there and gave our best effort and that is all you can really ask of your kids-try as hard as you possibly can."

In doubles action, CU’s No. 1 duo of Kendra Strandemo and Jessica Vanderdys defeated seniors Gitte Ostermann and Katie Garcia, 8-4, while at the No. 3 spot, junior Pamela Castillejos and freshman Ellinor Zugner fell to the Buffaloes’ Gleisy Torres Torres and Jenny Hanson, 8-3. With CU clinching the doubles point, the No. 2 match between Nebraska’s junior Ewelina Skaza and freshman Imke Reimers and Colorado’s Lynzee Kever and Martina Sedivec was not completed.

In singles play, Ostermann, ranked No. 36, rolled over Kever in straight sets at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, and at the No. 5 spot, Garcia picked up her 12th win of the season by defeating Sedivec, 6-2, 6-2. It was not enough for the Huskers as CU took points at the Nos. 3, 4 and 6 spots to clinch the victory. Because the victory was in hand for the Buffaloes, Reimers did not finish her match against Strandemo at the No. 2 spot.

Colorado advances to the semifinals played Saturday, April 30 against the No. 2 seed Texas Longhorns at 2: 30 p.m.
