Thirteen Huskers Named to Brook Berringer Citizenship Team

The Nebraska Athletic Department has announced that 13 members of the 2004 Husker football program have been named to the ninth annual Brook Berringer Citizenship Team.

The Brook Berringer Citizenship Team was established by the Husker football program in honor of former Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer, who died in a plane crash in April of 1996. Berringer was a member of NU’s back-to-back national championship teams in 1994 and 1995. He was also one of the most dedicated Husker volunteers in the community with youth, both in Nebraska and in his hometown of Goodland, Kan. The team honors players who display a similar love and dedication for volunteering in the community.

The Brook Berringer Citizenship Team will be honored in pre-game ceremonies at Saturday’s annual Red-White Spring Game. Brook’s mother, Jan, and other members of the Berringer family will be on hand for the presentation. Also, helping in the presentation of the awards will be Head Coach Bill Callahan and former Husker defensive end Chris Kelsay. A member of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, Kelsay was a member of the 2002 Brook Berringer Citizenship Team.

This year’s Berringer Citizenship Team is headlined by a pair of 2004 seniors who are making their fourth appearance on the team in 2005, and four other players who were named to the team for the third time. Willie Amos, a senior receiver on last year’s team, was also named to the team in 2001, 2002 and 2004, giving him four years of recognition on the team. Amos’ classmate, place-kicker Sandro DeAngelis was named to the team for the fourth consecutive year. DeAngelis was also named to the 2003 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.

Among the three-time honorees were three 2004 seniors?quarterback Garth Glissman, defensive lineman Jeff McBride and receiver Ben Zajicek?in addition to junior fullback Dane Todd, who has been named to the Berringer Team in each of his first three seasons at Nebraska.

Senior long snapper Jake Peetz and junior quarterback Joe Dailey were both named to the Berringer Citizenship Team for the second consecutive year. The five first-time honorees included junior offensive lineman Greg Austin, senior wide receiver Mark LeFlore, sophomore place-kicker Eric Lueshen, junior center Kurt Mann and redshirt freshman place-kicker Jake Wesch.

The Husker football team is one of the leading contenders for Nebraska’s Team Life Skills Award, which will be presented at the annual Student-Athlete Academic Banquet this Sunday evening. In addition to hundreds of individual community outreach activities, the Huskers have had several team Life Skills events, including visiting four Lincoln area hospitals last fall and the Omaha Veteran’s Administration and Omaha Children’s Hospital in early March. Nebraska’s Life Skills Program for all sports is directed by Assistant Athletic Director for Student Life Keith Zimmer.
