Lincoln? The Nebraska football team held its sixth full-scale practice of the spring season Friday with a two-hour workout in full pads on the Memorial Stadium FieldTurf. NU once again finished the practice with a full-contact scrimmage.
“Practice was good,” Offensive Coordinator Jay Norvell said. “We had great situational work, some goal-line and red zone things. We tried to clean up our red zone passing, and we’ve also really worked them on third downs. I’m proud of our guys’ progress this far.”
The Huskers had a couple special visitors before the start of practice. Claude M. Bolton, Jr., the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology), spoke to the team before the start of Friday’s drills. Secretary Bolton is a native of South Sioux City, Neb., and received his commission in the Air Force in 1969 through the University of Nebraska’s Air Force ROTC program. In his position Bolton serves as the Army Acquisition Executive, the Senior Procurement Executive, and the Science Advisor to the Secretary. He also serves as the senior research and development official for the Department of the Army. Bolton closed his message to the team by presenting Coach Callahan with an Army cap.
Coach Callahan also welcomed Captain Tim Sumovich of the 308th Transportation Company back to Nebraska following a year in Iraq. Captain Sumovich, the commander of the 169-soldier Army Reserve unit from Lincoln that returned to Lincoln in March, briefly addressed the team. Before the unit left last year, Coach Callahan presented them with a signed Nebraska flag and the unit regularly received tapes and DVD’s of Nebraska games last fall.
Note to the Media: Saturday’s practice is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:15 a.m. Stretching will be open to the media to shoot, with Coach Callahan and requested players available to the media following the conclusion of practice. The Husker baseball and softball teams will both be in action on Saturday, with first pitch for both teams scheduled for 2 p.m. at Haymarket Park.
