Huskers Swept by Western Michigan

Corpus Christi, Texas --- The No. 70 Nebraska men’s tennis team ended the weekend late Saturday with a 5-0 setback against Western Michigan at the 37th Annual HEB Collegiate Championship. Due to inclement weather, NU’s remaining seventh-place match Sunday was cancelled, leaving the Huskers with a 1-2 record on the weekend.

The Huskers (7-6) took three matches to the third set and had chances to win the points, but came up on the short end as Western Michigan pushed through for the shutout. Only the No. 1 and 5 matches went two sets, while the No. 2, 3 and 4 slots went to the tiebreaker.

James Clow took an early lead and won his opening set at the No. 2 position, but Jose Orozco came charging back to win the second set 6-2 and then ran away with the tiebreaker 10-2. It was much of the same at the No. 3 slot as Adrian Szatmary won the initial set, 6-3, but then fell 7-6 and 10-7 in the final two sets to Brady Crosby. At the No. 4 slot, Jose Rivera dropped the first set but battled back to win the second 6-4 before falling in the decisive third set, 10-5.

Nebraska and Western Michigan did not compete in doubles.

The Huskers return to action on March 17, when Nebraska gets back into conference play as it travels to take on OklahomaState in Stillwater, Okla. The Huskers are 0-1 in Big 12 Conference action after falling to No. 1 Baylor in the second match of the season.
