No. 18 Huskers Fall to Texas State, 2-1, in 10 Innings

Round Rock, Texas ? Dominic Ramos’ 10th-inning RBI single broke a 1-all tie, as Texas State pulled out a 2-1 win over No. 18 Nebraska at the Maxwell Auto Group Round Rock College Classic at the Dell Diamond Saturday afternoon.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, the Bobcats (11-4) rallied off NU reliever Johnny Dorn, getting a two out single by Nolan Mast before Dawid Bednarek walked to put runners on first and second. Ryan Bohanan then came out of the bullpen to face Ramos, Texas State’s leadoff hitter. After fouling off a pair of 3-2 pitches, Ramos, who went 2-for-5, hit a ball down the third base line. The ball caromed off the bag and past NU third baseman Alex Gordon, whose throw could not beat a sliding Mast at home for the game-winning run.

The Bobcats’ heroics in the 10th inning not only snapped Nebraska’s eight-game winning streak, but foiled the Huskers bid for their first 9-0 start since 1998.

The Huskers (8-1) receive strong pitching performances, as Phil Shirek and three relievers held Texas State to one run until the 10th, while three Bobcat pitchers held the Huskers to just three hits in a pitchers’ duel.

According to Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson, the Huskers’ plate discipline was the reason for the squad’s offensive woes after jumping to a 1-0 lead in top of the first.

"It was a wasted game today because we had a great pitching performance," Anderson said. "There are days where we will have bad offensive days, but we were extremely undisciplined and had a lack of focus today. I’m very disappointed with that and that is what I told our team after the game."

Scott Moore (3-0) earned the victory, holding the Huskers hitless over the final two innings for the win.

Dorn (0-1) pitched well in a losing effort, allowing only one hit ? Mast’s single in the 10th ? and struck out four in holding Texas State at bay over four innings of relief.

The Huskers took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Joe Simokaitis. Trey Adams was hit by a pitch to open the game before an errant pickoff attempt allowed Adams to move into scoring position. Simokaitis then singled to right to put NU ahead, 1-0.

That would be the only run the Huskers got off TSU starter Chris Jean, who allowed just two hits over six innings, but did not factor into the decision. Jean pitched himself into trouble throughout his outing, hitting five batters, walking three others and committing a pair of balks, but the Huskers could not missed several opportunities to increase their lead.

Nebraska starter Phil Shirek pitched well, allowing four hits, and took advantage of a Husker defense that turned double plays in each of the first two innings.

Shirek, who fanned three, took a shutout into the sixth before the Bobcats got the equalizer on Kyle Anson’s RBI double. With one out, Cassidy Dresch walked and stole second before Anson sent Shirek’s 0-1 pitch into the right field corner, tying the score at one all. Zach Kroenke came into the game and got pitcher hitter Jose Rodriguez to strikeout, but the ball went past catcher Mark Hightower. Anson attempted to score on the play, but Hightower fired to Kroenke, who tagged out Anson to snuff out the threat.

The Huskers will conclude tournament play Sunday morning against No. 18 USC. First pitch at the Dell Diamond is set for 10 a.m.
