Freshman Stephen T?trault earned a second-place finish in the vault during the event finals portion of the MPSF Championships on Saturday, March 26 in Norman, Okla. T?trault scored a 9.40 on the apparatus to follow a solid mark of 9.625 from Oklahoma’s David Henderson who finished first.
“The fact that T?trault didn’t win is actually going to help him,” Allen said. “Now he’ll get back into the gym with that one on his mind and because he’s such an intense competitor, he’ll start really working even harder.”
T?trault, who also finished fourth on the pommel horse (8.95), was Nebraska’s highest finisher of the afternoon. Senior Steven Friedman also had a successful meet, finishing fourth on the parallel bars with a 9.05.
“Steven [Friedman] is really just getting back to being healthy and his performance is an example of that,” Allen said. “I really think he’s one of the top guys in the conference and this shows what a talented athlete he is.”
Two other Huskers competed in day two of the MPSF Championships including sophomore Jason Wassung on the pommel horse and vault and senior Mace Patterson on the pommel horse and high bar.
Sophomore Paul Chumreonlert qualified to compete on the still rings, but opted to scratch his position due to injury.
The Huskers now prepare to wrap up the 2005 season as they head back to the gym over the next week to get ready for the NCAA Championships in West Point, N.Y. beginning on Thursday, April 7.
