Shooters Capture Conference Title

Oxford, Miss. - The Nebraska women's rifle team won its first Great American Rifle Conference title Sunday afternoon, earning the honor in its first year of conference competition. Despite a disappointing performance in smallbore Sunday, the Huskers held on to win the title in the two-day competition.   Nebraska fell short of the smallbore title, shooting a 2,314. Army (2,318) captured the crown in that discipline, besting the Huskers by four points in a very close match. Junior Misty Chanek led the way for the Huskers in smallbore, finishing third in the event with a 584 in regulation and a 97 in the finals.   Adding the Huskers' Saturday score in air rifle (2,349) to its Sunday smallbore score, the team shot a combined 4,663, good enough to earn the overall conference title. Army (4,647) took second in the overall race, while defending champion Kentucky finished third (4,632).   Sunday's conference title capped a very successful weekend for the Huskers. On  Friday, sophomore Kristina Fehlings was named GARC Shooter of the Year and earned first-team all-conference honors in both smallbore and air rifle. Sophomore Stacy Underwood was named Nebraska's GARC scholar athlete.

The Huskers will now set their sights on the March 11-12 NCAA Championships. The Huskers qualified for the championships after shooting the second best score in the nation at NCAA qualifiers.
