Lincoln -- The No. 38 Nebraska women’s tennis team defeated Utah, 6-1, Saturday, Feb. 26, at the WoodsTennisCenter to improve NU’s record to 10-1. The Huskers extended their home non-conference winning streak to 62 matches.
Assistant coach Sadhaf Pervez was pleased with the team’s effort.
“We got the job done,” Pervez said. “We played with a lot of heart. Utah really competed well and came after us today, but we handled it well.”
The Huskers struggled early in doubles. At the No. 1 slot, the No. 23 duo of seniors Gitte Ostermann and Katie Garcia defeated Elizabeth Ferris and Allison Hansen, 8-4. At the No. 2 spot, newcomers Imke Reimers and Ewelina Skaza improved their season record to 10-1 with a win over Emily Kwok and Whitney Eber, 8-5.
The match of the day was at the No. 5 singles slot between junior Pamela Castillejos and Utah’s Hansen. Castillejos took a tight first set, 7-5. In the second set, NU’s junior come back fell short when she dropped the set’s tiebreaker, 8-6. In the third set, Castillejos bounced back to take the super-breaker, 10-4. Skaza dominated Cheyenne Reveche, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.
Nebraska is on a nine-match home winning streak.
The loss dropped Utah’s record to 7-4.
Nebraska will finish out the weekend at the WoodsTennisCenter with WichitaState on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m.
