NU Fourth Heading into Last Day of Big 12 Meet

College Station, Texas? The Nebraska swimming and diving team sits in fourth place after three days of competition at the Big 12 Championships.  The Huskers received three top-eight finishes on Friday to set the stage for the meet's final day on Saturday.

“We had some outstanding performances today and they did what they needed to do,” said assistant coach Doug Humphrey.  “Some of the things that went against us were out of our control but it sets up a great day for tomorrow.”

Junior diver Amie Buoy picked up her second runner-up finish of the meet with a score of 255.50 in the finals of the one-meter competition.  Buoy trailed only Texas A&M's Rosie Whitney, who won both the one- and three-meter diving competitions.

Sophomore Lauren Bailey collected the fifth top-five individual finish of her career at the Big 12 Championships with a fifth-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle.  Bailey swam against seven Texas and Texas A&M swimmers, two of whom set NCAA automatic qualifying marks.  Bailey was one of eight swimmers in the finals or consolation finals to set an NCAA provisional mark.

Sophomores Bailey Ingles and Casey Schnack also qualified for Friday night’s finals as part of the consolation finals.  Ingles set a career-best mark of 4:24.94 to place 11th, while Schnack finished 16th in 4:31.50.

Junior co-captain Rachel Schlatter joined Lauren Bailey in championship finals, placing eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.35.  Freshman Adrienne Goodman added a 10th-place finish in the event in 1:04.11, followed by Lana Baker in 13th with a time of 1:05.21.  Freshman Lynn Siemert, who took seventh in the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday, placed 20th in 1:08.02.

In the 100-yard butterfly, freshman Betsy Grover finished third in the consolation final for an 11th-place overall finish in 56.76.  Senior Diana Torres finished 14th in 57.39.  Freshman Haley Koss and junior Alex King also competed in the 100-yard butterfly, placing 23rd (59.33) and 24th (1:00.43), respectively.

Sophomore Emilee Crawford was NU’s top finisher in the 100-yard backstroke with a 12th-place overall finish in a time of 58.15.  Torres took 18th in a career-best time of 58.85 in the last 100-yard backstroke race of her collegiate career.  Junior Kate Dulgar took 23rd in 1:01.07.

In the final event of the day, Nebraska's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Siemert, King, Kate Wheeler and Michelle Criss placed sixth in a season-best time of 1:34.94.

Nebraska will focus its attention on regaining the No. 3 position in the final team standings on Saturday.  The Huskers were in third place heading into Friday's finals, but Kansas moved ahead of NU in the team standings.

The Huskers hope to score big points in the 1,650 and 100-yard freestyle races and the 200-yard breaststroke, along with a strong showing in the platform diving competition.

“We are in a battle for third,” Humphrey said.  “We will look for great performances tomorrow, and we are very capable of doing that.  In the past the fourth day is always a strong day.”

The final day of competition for the 2005 Big 12 Championships will begin Saturday at 10 a.m.  Finals are set for 6 p.m.
