Columbus, Ga. ?Cal-State Northridge scored four runs on only two hits in the fifth inning of its 7-2 victory over the 17th-ranked Nebraska softball team at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., on Friday. The loss snapped the Huskers’ winning streak at seven.
Freshman right-hander Jordan Keen (4-1) suffered the first loss of her career as Nebraska fell to 7-2 on the season. Keen tossed a complete game, allowing seven runs (two earned) on eight hits and five walks. Kia Fennell (3-1) earned the win for CSUN, which improved to 5-1.
The fifth inning began harmless enough for NU as Keen recorded two outs on two pitches, before surrendering a single and a walk. CSUN’s Heather Martin then sent a 3-2 pitch to center field where junior Trisha Tannahill got a glove on the ball but was unable to haul it in, allowing Laura Hovestreydt to score. Jan Moshier, the Matadors’ No. 4 hitter then cleared the bases with a three-run home run to centerfield to give Cal-State Northridge a 4-1 lead.
Nebraska broke through first in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Elizabeth Rock reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on a ground out by senior Anne Steffan. Junior Jessica Yoachim then sent a single to left-center field that scored Rock with the game’s first run.
Cal-State Northridge added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. The first three batters reached base safely via a pair of singles and an error. Back-to-back RBI ground outs scored Kelly Zakosek and Darcy Hillstrom before Jamie Pederson scored the Matadors’ seventh run of the game when she came home on a wild pitch by Keen.
NU scored one run with a two-out rally in the seventh. Singles by Steffan and Yoachim brought up senior Sheena Lawrick with a final chance to extend her season-opening eight-game hitting streak. Lawrick was unable to extender he hit streak, but she did bring Steffan home when her fly ball to left field was dropped by Hillstrom. Lawrick finished 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and has now reached base safely in each of Nebraska nine games.
Rock, Yoachim and Steffan each finished 2-for-3 to lead NU offensively.
