Des Moines, Iowa --- The No. 69 Nebraska men’s tennis team picked up its second straight win with a 5-2 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday at the Drake Tennis Center.
Nebraska got off to a strong start as it swept the three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. It was the third straight match the Huskers won the doubles point, after falling in doubles in six of its first seven matches this season.
“It looks like we’re starting to find more of a rhythm right now and are playing much better in doubles than in the beginning of the year,” NU Coach Kerry McDermott said. “We have started to get better cominations in doubles play and that has helped get us off to a good start. It definitely helped this weekend.”
After posting an early lead, the Huskers (6-4) never let up against the Trojans (7-2), who came into the weekend with a seven-match winning streak before dropping contests to host Drake and Nebraska.
A day after having a six-match win streak snapped, James Clow got back on the right track as he posted a solid 6-3, 6-4, victory over Nihal Advani at the No. 2 singles slot. Jose Rivera increased his team-leading win total to 10 singles victories this spring with a 6-2, 7-5, win over Ricardo Roigas at the No. 5 slot. Adrian Szatmary and Joerg Barthel added singles wins at the No. 3 and 6 slots, respectively, for the Huskers.
“It was good to finish with a pair of wins after suffering a disappointing loss Friday to open the weekend,” McDermott said. “We bounced back and I thought really showed some character. We played good, smart matches the past two days and that builds momentum. Now we have a couple weeks to get over some injuries and get ready for the rest of the season.”
Nebraska returns home for practice until hitting the road for the H.E.B. Tournament March 4-5 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
