Las Vegas, Nev. -- The Nebraska bowling team captured its first tournament title in 2005 at the Coca-Cola Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. Jan. 29-30. The Huskers dominated the two-day tournament, held at the Orleans Bowling Center, as they lapped the field with a pinfall of 12,028. Nebraska competed against some of the top bowling programs in the country, including Sacred Heart, New Jersey City, and Maryland-Eastern Shore. West Texas placed second behind the Big Red with a pinfall of 11,239. The Huskers currently have won four consecutive Coca-Cola Invitational championships.
Junior Jamie Martin, a native of Omaha, Neb., led NU to the tournament title. Martin earned her first career tournament title with an average of 207. Previously, her best finish was at the 2003 Triad Women’s Classic where she finished third overall with an average of 227.
"Jamie bowled very well," Head Coach Bill Straub said. "It was a great tournament for her to win, and we are all excited. I felt really good about how we bowled this tournament."
Freshman Lindsay Baker placed fourth with a 193 average to join Martin on the all-tournament team. Shannon Pluhowsky finished in sixth place averaging a 192 average, Amanda Burgoyne placed 10th with a 189 average, and Adrienne Miller rounded out the Husker contingent with a 23rd-place showing (180 average).
On the season, Nebraska now has three tournament titles in five events.
The Huskers will be back in action Feb. 26-27 at the Bayside Collegiate Classic in Baltimore, Md.
