Lincoln ? Jake Muhleisen scored a season-high 25 points, as Nebraska snapped a three-game losing streak with a 77-67 victory over Texas A&M in front of 7,839 at the BobDevaneySportsCenter Wednesday evening.
The 6-foot-4 senior guard from Lincoln Southeast celebrated his father’s 50th birthday with one of the finest all-around performances of his career. The younger Muhleisen hit 6-of-7 from the field, including a trio of three-pointers, and added six rebounds in easily topping his previous season high of 11 points at Tennessee on Dec. 30.
Muhleisen’s 25-point performance was his second-best output of his career, trailing only a 28-point effort against Alaska-Fairbanks as a sophomore. It his most since suffering a season-ending hip injury in January of 2002.
With the win, the Huskers improved to 9-7 on the season and evened its Big 12 mark at 3-3, its best six-game start to conference play since the 1998-99 season. Texas A&M dipped to 13-4 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Wes Wilkinson joined Muhleisen in double figures, finishing with 12 points, as the Huskers hit 32-of-45 free throws and converted 13 Aggie turnovers into 21 points. Muhleisen connected on 10 of his 11 attempts from the charity stripe, while Wilkinson missed just one free throw in seven attempts.
In all, four Texas A&M players fouled out, including Joseph Jones, who had just three points and one rebound in 11 minutes before fouling out with 16:18 remaining. Four other Aggies finished with four fouls.
Only the Aggies' long-range shooting kept the visitors in the contest. A&M hit 9-of-22 from three-point range, including four by Antonie Wright, who finished with a team-high 17 points. Acie Law was the only other Texas A&M player to finish in double figures, as he totaled 16 points and added a game-high seven rebounds.
Nebraska, which never trailed, opened the game with a 12-4 spurt, as John Turek scored six of his seven points in the first six minutes of the contest. The Huskers continued to extend the lead, building its largest lead of the half at 22-10 after a Corey Simms layup with 9:38 left in the first stanza.
NU led 28-18 before the Aggies used a 7-2 run of its won to pull within 30-25 on a Wright three-pointer with 2:36 in the half. Texas A&M stayed within striking distance the rest of the half and was within 32-27 before Muhleisen, who scored 10 points in the first period, hit a reverse layup to beat the halftime horn, giving the Huskers a seven-point lead at the break.
The Huskers, who have won 10 of the 13 all-time meetings, broke open a 34-29 lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Nebraska scored six straight points on a conventional three-point play by Wilkinson and a three-pointer from Muhleisen that pushed the lead to 40-29.
Nebraska eventually built its largest lead of the evening at 59-45 after a pair of Marcus Neal Jr. free throws with 7:15 remaining, but the Aggies used a 5-0 spurt to close to within 59-50 after Wright split a pair of free throws at the 6:19 mark. That would be as close as the visitors got until the final minute. Turek made the first free throw and missed the second on NU’s next possession, but the Huskers got the offensive rebound and converted on Joe McCray’s layup, pushing the margin back to 62-50.
The Huskers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 29, as they travel to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech. The game will be televised on ESPN Regional television, including Ch. 10/11 in Lincoln, beginning at 12:45 p.m.
