Nebraska Defeats Creighton in Season Opener

Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 71 Nebraska women’s tennis team dominated Creighton, 7-0, in the Huskers' season opener on Thursday, Jan. 20 at the Woods Tennis Center. The victory extends NU's home non-conference winning streak to 55  matches .

Head Coach Scott Jacobson was pleased with his team's performance.

"It was a good beginning. We played with lots of energy, enthusiasm and determination,"  Jacobson said. "Now we must focus on Colorado State because it is a much improved program."

Senior Gitte Ostermann, who is ranked No. 19 nationally, bounced back after being down 5-2 in the first set to win 7-5. She never looked back and took the second set 6-4. Senior captain Katie Garcia won the first completed match of the day when she defeated Elizabeth Hurley, 6-2, 6-0.

Assistant coach Sadhaf Pervez said Garcia demonstrated her leadership abilities by winning early.

"Katie is the rock of our team,"  Pervez said. "Winning a match early on like that really helped give us confidence."

Several Huskers also picked up their first wins of the spring season, including Ellinor Zugner, who defeated Shannon Whelan, 6-3, 6-0.  Also winning for the first time as Huskers were Imke Reimers at the No. 2 slot, along with Ewelina Skaza at No. 4.  

The Big Red will close out the opening weekend of the spring season with Colorado State Sunday, Jan., 23, at the Woods Tennis Center.
