Spiric Earns Big 12 Rookie Honor

Lincoln - Nebraska junior Jelena Spiric earned Big 12 Women's Basketball Rookie-of-the-Week honors for her outstanding play during the Huskers' two victories to open Big 12 Conference action last week.

Spiric, a 6-1 forward out of Colby (Kan.) Community College, played the best two games of her Nebraska career to help the Huskers open Big 12 play with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Spiric scored a career-high 18 points and matched her career-best with six rebounds at Missouri to help the Huskers erase a 13-point deficit with 8:26 play.

The native of Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro scored 12 points off the bench in the first half alone, which eclipsed her previous career-best of 10 points. She also dished out four assists and grabbed two steals. Spiric opened the week with eight points and a career-high six rebounds to go along with two steals and an assist in 26 minutes of action in the win over Colorado. Spiric hit her first three-pointer in six games against the Buffaloes. For the week, she averaged 13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals while hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field for 61.5 percent.

Baylor junior forward Sophia Young earned Big 12 Player-of-the-Week accolades for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career. Young led the No. 3 Bears to a 2-0 record in conference play last week with wins over Texas A&M and No. 7 Texas. She averaged 23.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game, all three averages led all Big 12 Conference players during the first week of the season.

Spiric and Young will square off against each other on Wednesday night, as the Huskers play host to the Bears at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln.  Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.

Nebraska (10-4), which has never beaten a top-five opponent, will try to extend its four-game overall winning streak and eight-game homecourt winning streak against the Bears.  Baylor (12-1) owns four consecutive wins against the Huskers and a 12-game winning streak this season since losing to No. 1 LSU, 71-70, in Austin, Texas on Nov. 14.
