Singapore ? Nebraska bowler Shannon Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.) took home the gold in the 40th annual AMF Bowling World Cup held at the SuperBowl SAFRA Mount Faber facility on Sunday. She became the third woman to ever win the crown twice (2002, 2004), when Pluhowsky defeated Kerrie Ryan-Ciach of Canada, the 2003 World Cup champion, 2-0 (236-200, 234-185,) in the championship match.
Pluhowsky, the three-time U.S. National amateur champion, represented the United States for the third year in a row. In 2002, she won the World Cup crown at just 20 years old. Last year she nearly became the first person to repeat as World Cup champion in 20 years. Pluhowsky finished second behind Ryan-Ciach in 2004 was looking for a repeat herself.
Pluhowsky was the No. 2 seed advancing to the championship round by beating the No. 3 seed Liza Del Rosario of the Philippines 2-0, (259-226, 269-169) in the semifinals. Ryan-Ciach, the No.8 seed, advanced to the finals by beating out the No. 5 seed, Yoselin Leon of Puerto Rico, 2-1 (279-190, 193-257, 208-193).
With an average of 249.5 for the day, Pluhowsky was able to give the United States its 13th World Cup title (7 men, 6 women) in the 40 years of the tournament.
Pluhowsky will be departing from Singapore on Monday. The Huskers will return to action on Jan. 21, 2005 at the Springfield Classic in Springfield, Mo.
