University of Nebraska men’s golf coach Bill Spangler has announced that Lincoln Southeast standouts Joe Kubick and Trent Price have signed National Letters-of-Intent to join the Husker golf program, beginning with the 2005-06 season.
Kubick and Price have been teammates for Coach Dan Wolf at Southeast High School each of the past three years, helping the Knights to two top-three finishes at the state high school championships. The two have also been prominent on the state junior golf scene in recent years, combining to win each of the last three Nebraska Junior Match Play Championships.
Kubick will receive the award as the 2004 Nebraska Junior Amateur Player of the Year for his outstanding performance over the past year. Kubick captured his second straight Junior Match Match Play title in 2004, becoming the first player to win the championship in back-to-back years since its inception in 1990. Kubick also performed well in the Nebraska Match Play, reaching the third round before being eliminated.
On the national level, Kubick qualified for the 2004 U.S. Junior Championship at the The Olympic Club in San Francisco, and advanced to the match-play portion of the competition. Kubick missed much of his high school junior season at Southeast because of injury, but finished as the Class A runner-up in each of his first two years with the Knights, helping LSE to a second-place finish in 2002 and a third-place showing in 2003.
A talented all-around athlete, Price was the runner-up at the 2004 Class A high school meet, capping an outstanding junior campaign for the Knights. He played a limited golf schedule this summer, as he prepared for his senior season of football and basketball at Southeast. Despite playing in only a handful of events, Price finished ninth in the Nebraska Junior Golf Association point standings.
Price built an impressive resume in junior golf early in his golf career. Price captured the 2002 Junior Match Play title before his sophomore year at Southeast. He and Kubick were also both regular members of Nebraska’s junior team for the prestigious Nebraska-Kansas Junior Cup matches. Price was a member of Nebraska’s teams in 2002 and 2003, while Kubick has represented the state each of the last three years.
Price recently completed his senior season of football at Southeast, where he was a key performer on both offense and defense. Price finished the year with nine receptions and three touchdowns as a receiver, and made 18 tackles and had an interception on defense. On the hardwood, Price helped Lincoln Southeast to the state semifinals as a junior when he was a key reserve for Coach Jeff Smith’s team. He is expected to be a key performer for the Knights this winter.
Spangler said Price and Kubick will continue to help build a strong foundation for the future of the Husker golf program.
“Both Joe and Trent are great fits for our program,” Spangler said. “They have excellent ability and should make an impact on our program. We have had several talented junior players in the state in the past few years, and fortunately most of them have chosen to stay in-state to play their collegiate golf.
“Joe had an outstanding summer and I think that will carry into a great senior season of high school golf. He will come in with a lot of experience and success at the junior level. Trent is more of a raw talent, who has had a lot of golf success, but has also been playing football and basketball. Once Trent focuses on golf and gets a little more experience, I think he can develop into an outstanding collegiate player.”
