Ruud Earns Big 12 Honor

Nebraska senior linebacker Barrett Ruud has been named the SBC Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in Nebraska’s 24-3 victory over Missouri on Saturday in Lincoln.

Ruud led the Blackshirt defense with 17 tackles, including six solo stops. The Lincoln native made four tackles for loss, including a sack of Tiger quarterback Brad Smith. Ruud’s four tackles for loss tied a Nebraska linebacker position record and pushed his career tackle for loss total to 46, second on the Huskers’ career chart.

The 6-2, 240-pound Ruud leads Nebraska with 109 tackles in 2004, including 67 solo stops. Ruud continues to build the Husker career tackle record and now has 398 total tackles in his career. He is two tackles from becoming the seventh player in Big 12 history to record 400 career tackles.

Ruud’s selection as Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week is the second of his career. Last season he earned the honor following his performance in a 48-12 Nebraska victory over Texas A&M.

Other players of the week selected on Monday included:

Offensive Player of the Week
Adrian Peterson, Fr, RB, Oklahoma (Palestine, Texas)
Peterson rushed for a career-high 249 yards and one touchdown in Oklahoma's 38-35 victory at No. 20 Oklahoma State. His 80-yard, third-quarter touchdown run put OU up 35-21. On the Sooners’ next possession, Peterson’s 56-yard scamper broke the Oklahoma freshman rushing record of 1,184 yards set by De’Mond Parker in 1996. Peterson, with 1,272 yards on the season, posted his eighth consecutive 100-yard rushing game.

Co-Special Teams Players of the Week

Danny Amendola, Fr, PR, Texas Tech (The Woodlands, Texas)
Amendola 90-yard punt return for touchdown tied the second-longest in Texas Tech history and helped stake the Red Raiders to a 35-25 win at Kansas State. It was Tech’s first punt return for touchdown by a true freshman since 2000, and longest in the Big 12 since Bobby Newcombe’s (Nebraska) 94-yarder also in 2000.

Willie Andrews, Jr, KR, Baylor ( Longview, Texas)
Andrews totaled 164 return yards in Baylor’s 35-34 overtime win over No. 16 Texas A&M. His 59-yard kick return led to the Bears game-tying touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The victory was Baylor’s first over a ranked opponent since 1998. Andrews is named Player of the Week for the second time this season, receiving defensive accolades following Week 4.
