Stalls Lifts Huskers to Sweep of Iowa State

Lincoln ? Tracy Stalls wowed a season-high crowd of 7,276 with one of the most efficient performances in school history, leading fourth-ranked Nebraska to a 30-16, 30-21, 30-19 sweep of Iowa State Saturday evening at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Stalls, a 6-3 freshman from Arvada, Colo., had a career-high 14 kills on 17 attempts, as her .824 hitting percentage tied for the fourth-highest individual percentage in school annals. It easily topped her previous best of .643 on 14 swings against Western Michigan on Sept. 6, as Stalls established a career-high in kills for the second straight match.

"Physically, she's able to move a lot better, and I think it takes time for a setter and a hitter to get confident in each other," Cook said about Stalls’ second straight strong outing after missing two matches last week. "I think Dani (Busboom) is getting really confident setting Tracy, and she set her in a couple of really tough situations tonight."

While Stalls provided the offensive firepower, Jennifer Saleaumua and Melissa Elmer helped limit the Cyclones to .030 hitting in the win. Saleaumua notched her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and a season-high 20 digs, while Elmer recorded a team-high 10 blocks and had eight kills while hitting .368.

The win was also the 300th in the career of Nebraska Head Coach John Cook, who is 300-83 in 12 seasons, including the last five on the Husker sideline. The Huskers, who improved to 15-1 with their 12th straight win, moved into sole possession of first in the Big 12 with tonight’s win and No. 20 Texas A&M’s 3-1 win over ninth-ranked Texas in College Station.

Stalls helped the Huskers get out of the gate quickly, recording two kills, two blocks and an ace in an early 12-3 Husker run, as Nebraska built 10-point lead early and cruised to a 30-16 win in the opener. The Huskers held ISU to -.065 hitting while Stalls’ six kills matched the Cyclone team total in the opener.

The Cyclones hung around for the first half of game two and were within 15-14 after a kill from Erin Boeve before freshman Sarah Pavan and Saleaumua a decisive Husker run. Pavan ripped consecutive kills before Saleaumua scored Nebraska’s next three points, as the Huskers built a 20-15 lead. ISU got to within four points, but NU then scored the next five points, including three straight blocks by Elmer, who combined with Ally Rebholz for the final two as NU took a 26-17 lead and finished game two with a 30-21 victory.

"I thought we did some really good things the first two games," Nebraska Coach John Cook said. "Iowa State is difficult to play against because they're very unorthodox and a finesse team. The way we train, we're not used to seeing it (that style of volleyball) everyday. I thought we did a good job with discipline and in staying balanced."

In the finale, the Huskers seized the momentum early with a 6-0 run, as Saleaumua serviced five straight points, while Dani Mancuso, who had a career-high 22 kills on Wednesday vs. Kansas State, had three kills in the run, as Nebraska took a 13-5 lead and cruised to a 30-19 victory in the finale. Elmer had four of her 10 blocks, in limiting the Cyclones to -.021 hitting in the win.

Erin Boeve was the lone bright spot for Iowa State (8-10, 1-9 Big 12), as she finished with 13 kills on .435 hitting, as the Cyclones fall to 0-65 all-time against Nebraska.

The Huskers will now gear up for a Big 12 showdown on Wednesday, when they travel to ninth-ranked Texas. First serve in Gregory gymnasium is set for 6:30 p.m and the game will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln.
