Posch, Szatmary Advance at Region V Championships

Tulsa---- Jerry Posch and Adrian Szatmary each won a pair of matches in the singles main draw and advanced to the round of 16 to lead the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska men’s tennis team at the ITA Region V Championships at the Michael Case Tennis Facility Friday. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

Szatmary, who is the No. 5 seed in the main draw, picked up a first-round win over Tom McCarthy of Creighton, 6-1, 6-4, before coming back with a three-set victory over Andy Connelly of host Tulsa, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1. Posch earned a first-round victory over Cuon Forhuharjon of Oral Roberts, 6-1, 6-4, and picked up his second straight-set victory of the day with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Daliboe Pavic of Drake to reach the round of 16. Posch has just one singles loss this fall, as he now owns an 8-1 record.

 

Four Huskers fell out of contention Friday at the region meet, as Marcus Karner, Joerg Barthel, James Clow and Joel Reckewey each dropped their singles match in the round of 64. Karner, who reached the main draw after advancing through qualifying play, fell to No. 1 seed Mark Van Elden of Oklahoma State, 6-0, 6-3, while Barthel dropped a tough 7-6, 6-2, contest to Oklahoma’s Alexei Ivanov, the tournament’s No. 7 seed. Clow fell to Andrei Nicoara of Arkansas, 6-2, 7-5, while Reckewey dropped a 6-4, 6-2, match to No. 9-seed Ondrej Fukala of Oklahoma.

 

In doubles action, Clow and Reckewey picked up the tempo and came away with an 8-3 win over Oral Roberts’ Forhuharjon and Hill for the Huskers’ lone doubles win of the day.

 

The 2004 Wilson/ITA Region V Championships continue Saturday, Oct. 16.
