Huskers Head to ITA Regional Championships

Members of the Nebraska women’s tennis team travel to Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 20 for the ITA Regional Tournament which runs through Oct. 24 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.  The trip to Oklahoma will be the second fall tournament for NU in nearly two weeks.

In the singles qualifying round, the Huskers will send senior Katie Garcia and juniors Ewelina Skaza and Pamela Castillejos to compete for Nebraska.  Three other Huskers have earned spots in the main draw of the singles tournament, with No. 44 ranked Gitte Ostermann leading the way.  Sophomore Milena Schulz-Gartner and freshman Imke Reimers will also play in the main draw of the tournament.

On the doubles court, Nebraska will send two combinations for its second tournament of the fall season.  Ostermann and Reimers along with Schulz-Gartner and Skaza will compete in the qualifying round of the tournament.

The Huskers conlcuded the Riviera/ITA All-American Chapionships on Oct 5.  Two of the newcomers have made an immdediate impact already.  Reimers and Skaza both turned in records of 2-1 in singles play,  and in doubles Schulz-Gartner and Skaza also posted a 2-1 record.

The Huskers’ Ostermann enters the fall season with a No. 44 national ranking.  This marks the third consecutive season that Ostermann has received a preseason ranking.  She is also one of only three Husker women to be named to the All-Big 12 team multiple times.  Adding to her honors is a No. 74 doubles ranking at the end of the 2004 spring season with Garcia.

Ostermann, who has been Nebraska’s No. 1 singles player, was the only Husker to compete in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships.  She rolled through the first round before falling to to Boglarka Berecz of Florida in two hard-fought sets.

The ITA Regional Championships will mark the second of three fall tournaments for the Huskers.
