Lincoln? In a contest between the top two teams in the Big 12 Conference, the Texas A&M soccer team used two second-half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat Nebraska 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Abbott Sports Complex.
With the win, the Aggies (12-3, 7-0) took firm control of the race for the Big 12 title. The loss snapped Nebraska’s seven-game winning streak and dropped the Huskers to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12.
“It was a good, hard fought game,” NU Head Coach John Walker said. “I’m happy with our effort, and we have no complaints.”
Nebraska took a 1-0 lead at 21:23 off a goal by junior Sasha Andrews. NU won a corner kick and sophomore Brittany Timko sent a ball into the box that Andrews was able to head past A&M goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak from five yards out.
Texas A&M tied the game 7:50 into the second half on a goal by Ashlee Pistorius off an assist from Amanda Burke.
The Aggies added the game winner in the 81st minute when Carrie Berend scored following a Texas A&M corner kick. On the corner, NU sophomore goalkeeper Katie Wright punched the ball out of the box, but Berend collected it from outside the box and lofted it over Wright’s head.
Nebraska added a late flurry, coming closest when sophomore Tanya Dennis’ shot bounced off the post and a rebound attempted was saved by an Aggie defender.
For the game, Texas A&M outshot Nebraska, 15-13 and put six shots on goal to five by NU.
The Huskers return to action next weekend when they close out a four-game homestand against Texas Tech and Baylor. Nebraska will face Texas Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday and Baylor at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
