Huskers End Fall Season With 3-2 Win

Lincoln ? Sophomore Jamie Waldecker provided the game-winning hit for the Nebraska softball team, as it concluded its fall season with a 3-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha in the final game of the Husker Fall Classic at Bowlin Stadium on Sunday.

The Huskers scored twice in the first inning. Junior Jessica Yoachim drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by Waldecker. Senior Kira Boerkircher pinch-ran for Waldecker and fellow senior Sheena Lawrick brought Yoachim and Boerkircher home with a double to right field on a 1-2 count.

Nebraska-Omaha closed to within 2-1 on a solo home run by Leslie Svoboda. The Mavericks then tied the game an inning later on an RBI single by Katie Novotny that scored Sara Sortino.

Nebraska was silent until the sixth when Steffan led off with a bloop double down the left field line. Yoachim then moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt and Waldecker doubled to the gap in right center on an 0-2 pitch to put NU back in the lead, 3-2.

Sophomore right-hander Ashley DeBuhr retired UNO in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory. DeBuhr pitched a complete-game four hitter and struck out seven.
