Posch Falls in ITA Men?s All-American Championships

Chattanooga, Tenn. -- The Husker men’s tennis team completed play Tuesday at the ITA All-American Championships at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. The last remaining Husker, Jerry Posch dropped his second match of the qualifying round to be eliminated.

After opening fall play with a perfect 6-0 record in singles action, Posch dropped his first match of the fall in a tough three-set marathon against William & Mary’s Sean Kelleher. Posch had the upperhand early as he won the first set in dominating fashion, 6-1, but Kelleher battled back to take the match with 7-5 victories in the second and third sets. Posch had a 5-4 lead in the third before Kelleher overcame the deficit to move into the round of 32.

Posch was one of two Huskers to win a match at the All-American Championships. Newcomer Marcus Karner also won a pre-qualifying round match before falling in the second round.

"We won a couple matches and had some people move on," said Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott. "This was a good learning experience, but it also showed us how many good college tennis players are out there. Our guys are ready to get back to work and take on that challenge."

Joerg Barthel and Jose Rivera will be in action again this weekend, Oct. 8-10, at the Georgia Tech Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta. The rest of the team will be off until Oct. 15 when NU hits the courts for the first round of the ITA Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
