Lubbock, Texas - The Nebraska women's golf team managed a final-round 321 to finish in a tie for 15th place with a two-round score of 632 at the 18-team Jeannine McHaney Invitational on Sunday.
The Huskers finished 39 strokes behind the team champions from Notre Dame, which finished 17-over par as a team through two rounds with a 593 after an opening-round 296 on Friday and a final round 297 on Sunday. The Fighting Irish finished four strokes ahead of Oklahoma, which finished at 597 after rounds of 298 and 299 in the rain-shortened tournament on the 6,375-yard layout on The Rawls Course. Heavy rains in Lubbock forced the cancellation of Saturday's second round to cut the 54-hole tournament to just 36 holes.
Merynn Ito fired the top round of the day for the Huskers by putting together a 4-over-par 76. The senior from Aiea, Hawaii, finished in a tie for 26th with a 153 (77-76).
Chrissie McArdle tied Ito in 26th with a final-round 78 to finish at 153, after opening the tournament with a 75 on Friday. The sophomore from Eden Prairie, Minn., participated in the tournament as an individual and her scores did not count toward NU's team total.
Each of Nebraska's four other golfers at the tournament shot 80 or above on Sunday. Coach Robin Krapfl said the Huskers struggled in their first road trip of the fall season.
"Our inexperience really showed out there today, but it was really a great learning experience for our young players," Krapfl said. "We will definitely be more prepared for our next road trip because of the situations we were in today."
Junior Chelsea Gehring, playing in her first career tournament in Nebraska's starting lineup, managed an 81 to finish in a tie for 58th overall among the 105 players in the field.
Junior Sara Sackett, a native of Cambridge, Neb., added an 80 on Sunday to tie for 76th place with a two-round score of 162 after opening the tournament with an 82 on Friday.
True freshman Elli Brown from Meridian, Idaho, produced an 84 in the final round to finish tied for 86th with a 164, after starting the tournament with an 80. Redshirt freshman Allison Stewart tied for 89th after rounds of 78 and 87 to close at 165.
Notre Dame's Katie Brophy claimed medalist honors with a 3-under-par 141 with rounds of 69 and 72, while Oklahoma's Amparo Gala finished two strokes back with a 1-under-par 143 (71-72).
Nebraska returns to action at the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 4-5.
