Lawrence, Kan. - In a tense defensive battle, Nebraska and Kansas combined for 89:03 of consecutive scoreless play, but it was the Huskers' goal less than a minute into the game that lifted NU to a 1-0 upset of the eighth-ranked Jayhawks in Lawrence.
Sophomore Brittany Timko beat a defender and sent a perfect shot to the top of the far post just 57 seconds into the game for her second game-winning goal of the week. The goal was the Huskers' second-fastest goal of the season.
"It was a tremendous effort across the board," NU Head Coach John Walker said. "We had great team play and a great result."
In goal, sophomore Katie Wright collected her fourth shutout of the year for Nebraska, which improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 Conference. Kansas dropped to 8-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12.
Timko's goal was just the third goal that KU has allowed in 10 games this season and was the fastest goal the Jayhawks have allowed in 2004.
After scoring quickly, Nebraska used a gritty second-half performance by its defense to pull off the upset. Kansas outshot Nebraska 16-7 for the game and had several scoring opportunities while outshooting the Huskers, 10-4, in the second half.
NU remains on the road when it travels to Iowa State for a 1 p.m. contest with the Cyclones.
