The Huskers dominated play, outshooting the Grizzlies 32-10 and putting a season-high 17 shots on goal to only three by Montana. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Wright made two saves in goal for Nebraska (5-3-0). Jamie Rizzuto recorded 14 saves as the Grizzlies dropped to 3-4-1 on the season.
Junior Nikki Baker put the Huskers up 1-0 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Sophomore Brittany Timko sent a pass into the box that Baker was able to control and beat Rizzuto low and to her right.
Timko found the back of the net 1:53 later when she took a perfect pass from senior Lindsey Ingram and beat Rizzuto one-on-one.
Both teams had scoring chances late in the game, but neither was able to find the back of the net. Montana’s Nikki Bolstad sent a shot off the post with 21:19 remaining and the Grizzlies won a corner kick and sent a shot wide with just seconds remaining.
Nebraska had its chances as well. Senior Brooke Bredenberg had a one-one-one opportunity with Rizzuto, but the Montana goalkeeper was able to make a diving save. Then with just 2:50 remaining, Ingram sent a shot that hit the post.
The 2-1 win marked the final game of a season-opening eight-game homestand for the Huskers. NU heads to Creighton on Tuesday before opening Big 12 Conference play at Kansas on Friday.
