Milkevics Headed for Olympic Games

Belgium - Dmitrijs Milkevics became the second Husker to qualify for the 2004 Olympics after he finished the 800-meter run in 1:45.6 at a meet in Belgium. By breaking 1:47, Milkevics achieved the Olympic B Qualifying Standard that his native country of Latvia required to compete in Athens, Greece later this month.

Milkevics’ time was the second-fastest time in school history and bettered his previous best mark of 1:47.06. Milkevics placed first in the 800-meter run at the 2004 Big 12 Indoor Championship and second at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship.

Milkevics, a sophomore-to-be, joins Priscilla Lopes as current Huskers who will compete in the 2004 Olympic Games. Lopes will represent Canada in the 100-meter hurdles.

Former Huskers Nenad Loncar (Serbia & Montenegro) and Ineta Radevica (Latvia) will also compete in Athens. Loncar will compete in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, while Radevica looks for gold in the women’s triple jump.
