United States Blanks Canada, 7-0

Athens - The United States Olympic softball team defeated Canada, 7-0, in five innings in the preliminary round of softball at the Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Jennie Finch allowed only one hit as the United States improved to 5-0 at the Olympics and shutout its fifth straight opponent. Canada dropped to 2-3, but still has a chance at advancing to the semifinals.

The top four teams advance to the semifinals and the Canadians are currently in a five-way tie for third place behind the United States and Australia (4-1).

Nebraska's Sheena Lawrick drew her second start of the Olympics and went 0-for-2. After starting at designated player against China, Lawrick saw her first defensive action of the games and recorded one put out at first base.

The Canadians continue play tomorrow against Australia at 11:30 a.m. (CDT).
