Huskers Roll Past AIS, 80-57

Sydney, NSW, Australia -- John Turek posted his second straight double-double to lead the Nebraska men’s basketball team to an 80-57 victory over the Australian Institute for Sport Thursday in Sydney.

"We played a pretty solid game, especially in the first and third quarters," said Coach Barry Collier. "Our rebounding definitely picked up in the second half, and our defensive effort was much more sound than recent games."

Playing its third game in less than 48 hours, Nebraska picked up its first win of the week, as it pulled away in the second half behind Turek’s strong play.

With Nebraska leading 42-33 in the third quarter, Turek started a 12-2 run as he scored 10 straight points on a pair of layups and back-to-back three-pointers. Turek finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, including nine offensive boards. He hit 8-of-14 field-goal attempts and added two blocks and two steals in 26 minutes.

The Huskers’ defensive effort was greatly improved as it allowed its lowest point total in three games during the tour. Nebraska outscored AIS by a 24-9 margin in the third quarter ? the teams played four, 10-minute quarters ? and allowed just two field goals in the period. The Huskers held AIS to fewer than 20 points in three of the four periods.

The Huskers limited AIS to 29 percent (18-of-62) shooting from the floor in the contest, including just 1-of-17 from three-point range. Nebraska countered with another solid offensive showing as it hit 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field, including 35 percent (7-of-20) from long range.

Nebraska ran out to an early 13-3 lead behind a pair of three-pointers from Marcus Neal Jr. and extended its lead to 20-10 at the end of the first period. In the second frame, Turek and Wes Wilkinson responded with 13 of the Huskers’ 18 points. Wilkinson finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

Jason Dourisseau added 10 points and six rebounds as the Huskers outrebounded AIS by a 56-35 margin. Neal finished with eight points while Charles Richardson Jr. had seven assists and no turnovers. Shuan Stegall produced seven points with four rebounds and three blocked shots in his most significant playing time of the tour.

After playing for three straight days, the Huskers will be off on Friday and return to the court on Saturday, Aug. 14, against the NBL's Wollongong Hawks.
