Stern to Represent Team Canada at Olympics

Lincoln ? Although the U.S. baseball team is not competing in the upcoming Olympic Games, Husker fans will have an opportunity to cheer on one of their own, as former Nebraska baseball player Adam Stern (London, Ontario) is a member of the Canadian National Team.

The Canadians, whose roster consists of current or former players in professional baseball, will play each of the seven qualifying teams (Chinese Taipei, Italy, Netherlands, Greece, Japan, Cuba and Australia) in a round-robin format from Aug. 15 to Aug. 22 with the top four teams advancing to the medal round. This is the first time that the Canadian team has qualified for the Olympics.

He saw limited duty during the Olympic qualifying round, going 1-for-7 with a homer and two RBIs to help Canada earn a silver medal and qualify for the Athens games.

Stern has been playing for the Greenville Braves, the Atlanta Braves’ AA affiliate in the Southern League. He has enjoyed his best minor league season to date, batting .320 with eight homers, 42 RBIs and 23 stolen bases while appearing in 90 games. `

Stern played three seasons at Nebraska, helping the Huskers to a Big 12 regular-season title and the school’s first College World Series appearance in 2001. A two-year starter, he batted .292 with five homers, 47 RBIs and 27 stolen bases as a junior in 2001, earning honorable-mention All-Big 12 honors. As a sophomore, the 5-11, 190-pounder earned second-team All-Big 12 honors by hitting .356 with 45 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in helping the Huskers to a school-record 51 wins and a Super Regional appearance.
